Great Grandmas Quilt Top!!

My Great Grandma Nettie Like Hobbs was born in 1904 and passed away in 1980. She made this quilt top and had given it to my grandma (my moms mother). My grandma never finished it but put it away. She passed it to my mom who never finished it and mom put it away. When grandma passed away in 2008 mom gave it to me. I really want to finish it and make a hand made label to put on the backing with great grandmas year of birth and death. I plan on using muslin for the backing as that is what she used surrounding the blocks. I wanted to use feedsack for the binding. I found these two so far on the left. I wanted to use colors that were primarily in the quilt like the green and orange. I wasn't sure if she liked these colors and thats why they were the main colors of the blocks or she just had alot of that fabric to use. I asked mom and she didn't know. I wish I could have asked grandma. I'm trying to decide which feedsack to use. If anyone has an opinion on which feedsack they like better I'd love to hear. I plan on hand quilting it so it will take me awhile to finish it along with all the other things I am doing.

I can't offer you any advice on fabric choices, because I'm an awful quilter and made myself stop trying! But what I can say is that you are so lucky to have your Great Grandma's quilt top. What a wonderful family heirloom!

I believe that most quilts made in the older days were made mostly of scraps on hand. I helped my grandmother make a quilt in my young teenage years and it now hangs in my hallway on display. I value the memories of helping with that quilt. I have never worked on a quilt since that long cold winter...

What a great family treasure. Oh yes, Quilting by hand will take a while. I quilted some pillow cases but I don't have the patience to quilt larger things.

Hi Cherry! I love the top fabric with it. I don't quilt either but I really like that one! And my favorite color is orange so I love this quilt top and the family history of it!! Have fun making a new memory, and I love the fact that you are going to use muslin also. XO Fran.
