I have had one of the worst weeks. I know the economy isn't the best to be quitting my job but running a fast food restaurant is extremely stressful and very time consuming. The constant inspections and the the level of competence has declined a lot over the last 10 years. So I threw in the towel and am going to start over. I am going back to school and finish my degree in nursing. I know its not going to be easy but it sure beats the hours I put into that store. I thought the Army took over my life but that store was sucking the life out of me. It was making me an angry miserable person and life's to short to live that way. Its funny, once you realize half your life has gone by you start to look at the next half very carefully. I had to make some changes to save myself. I'm scared to death, but so relieved.

This week was hell!!

And that is just how I felt when I quit my nursing job in June!!
I've nursed for 20 years & I'm sick of it! You think of the worst people you've had to deal with in fast food... Well you should see them when they come to the hospital!! What I'm trying to say is...it's everywhere you go. People have changed so much in just the past few years. They are mean, cruel, selfish and demanding. If you are a descent person...they suck the life right out of you.
Doctors (nor nurses) are for the most part, just not like they use to be. When you have to work long hours, nights and weekends and then you know the patient isn't getting the care he/she needs because the doctor really isn't capable or doesn't care, it wears on you. And The People on DRUGS now is unreal! They come because they are out, over dosed or have an infection because of their use.....they are a large percent of the admissions now. They are dangerous people. I've been hit, spit on and had feces thrown at me more times than I care to count!
I absolutely LOVE taking care of sick patients but it's the attitudes that I hate. It is so rare that we ( and I say we, because I consider my fellow employees my dear friends) would take care of someone that did not bring their illness on themselves and someone that treated us nurses with respect. It's so rare, it's sad!
I don't think I'm burned out on nursing...just people. My husband feels the same way and he runs a starter and alternator shop!
I'm sorry I sound so negative. Nursing can be rewarding but it is an extremely stressful job, physically & mentally . Being responsible for someone's life takes a tole espc when so much is out of your control.
Can we just switch body's for a while!! Lol.... Sorry for the downer comment.
Good for you! A very tough but brave decision. Staying in a job like that can take a toll on your health eventually.
I agree with Tina.People have changed everywhere. It's hard when you are a decent down to earth person because most people are just out for themselves..Good for you trying to change for the better.I think nursing is very rewarding you just have to get in at the right place.Warm Blessings!~Amy
I can imagine it was a very scary move, but nursing is a good occupational choice. Nurses are well paid and there re plenty of nursing jobs out there. You would think employers and patients would value nursing. Some do, but sadly, some don't. Best of luck as you move forward in this new direction.
Cherry , I wish you all the best in this decision and although there will be challenges in nursing as there was in the restaurant business ,you have more choices in nursing , you can make it better by specializing in a particular field , work in obstetrics or the operating room or even with seniors ,in these areas you are less likely to encounter the negativity that the first commenter mentions .I am a graduate nurse as well but have not been nursing in a number of years and I will agree that the nursing profession has changed a great deal over the years but so has everything else , it comes down to whether this is something you have always wanted to do , if so then don't let the music die in you as the saying goes , just go for it !! I am cheering you on !!!!
I sure hope things work out for you. I know how hard it can be to make a big change like this. But the schooling sounds like the right step! I'm proud of you and wish you the very best!
